Maternity Clothes: Ideas to feel comfortable and stylish

Maternity Clothes: Ideas to feel comfortable and stylish
One of the more exciting aspects of being pregnant is getting to organize a whole new wardrobe. There are so many options for these days to look fabulous AND more importantly, feel comfortable as your belly grows. For most women there’s a delicate balance between getting what they need and not overspending too much. Read on for help filling your closet with the essentials.

Belly band: the great wardrobe extender

It won't be long before your clothes may start feeling a little snug. Some women continue wearing their non-pregnancy clothing well into their second trimester, with the help of a belly band. Belly bands are wide, circular strips of fabric (think tube top) specially designed to fit around your mid-section. In the beginning of your pregnancy, you can wear one with your pre-maternity outfits so that you can keep your bottoms unzipped or unbuttoned and still ensure your pants/skirts stay up. As your belly goes, your belly band can offer an additional layer of support for your tummy. And even after your baby is born, a band will still be your friend. It makes it easier to wear your maternity clothes (and not have them fall down) before you can fit back into your old wardrobe.

Who doesn’t love a good pair of jeans?

Think you need to stop wearing jeans when you’re pregnant? No way. You’ll find plenty of pairs that are made for pregnancy. Normal jeans can be worn for many months of pregnancy, especially if they are a low rider style and sit under the bump, rather than over the top of it. As your bump grows, you can opt for maternity jeans. Maternity jeans use materials that have more stretch than ever. The fabric is also able to resume its original shape, even after being stretched.

Getting comfortable with your bra

As you notice your clothes getting snugger, you’ll find that your bra is, too. Maternity bras are designed to provide a different level of support to normal bras. They don’t have rigid wires and tend to have wider straps and more hook and eye options. They are also better constructed and have more “engineering” and design built into them. Did you know an ill-fitting maternity bra could lead to neck, shoulder and back strain? So be sure to shop for a bra that fits you comfortably, provides good support and makes you feel good. Not sure what to buy? Ask an expert. Many stores have specialists that can help you find the right size and style for you.

Taking your bump out in style

Create an elegant look for a special event or night out. Wear something that makes you feel great and puts a smile on your face. If you feel good, you’re going to look good, too. If you’re handy with sewing or know someone who is, think about up-cycling what you have, rather than buying something new. What about borrowing from a friend or hitting the second hand? If you opt to buy a new piece, make it a classy top that you can pair with pants or a skirt you already own. It doesn’t really matter what you’re wearing on the bottom, especially if you’re going to be sitting down for a large portion of the time. If you buy something made from stretchy fabric, you may be able to get more use out of the same garment even after your baby is born. And when it comes to color, black can be very forgiving and always looks good for night time.

Swimwear that’s sure to make a splash

Love swimming? With maternity swimwear, you can go for a dip and take your growing little one with you. Whatever swimwear you usually wear is likely to still be suitable for at least your  first trimester. Many women don’t “show” until their  second trimester, so even if you are used to wearing a bikini, it should still be fine for the early months. As your belly grows, you can still have plenty of options. One pieces. Bikinis. Tankinis. Swim skirts. And board shorts. Many suits feature shirring across the midsection so as your belly expands, the elastic stretches. Try avoid a swimsuit with tummy control panels which can make you feel uncomfortable. If your breasts are larger, a swimsuit top with a built-in, reinforced bust could help.
